First there was Newt the Gingrich, serving his wife divorce papers while she was in the hospital, so he could marry his mistress. Then there was Bob “Spank me” Livingston (above), so easily exposed as an adulterer that he never really took up the House gavel. Now, Dennis Hastert turns out to be a boy-buggerer. Everyone thought the former high school teacher was just what the Republican party needed, a wholesome leader to get them through the mechanics of impeaching the President of the United States for…yeah, you remember, having an affair.
Until last week:
On Thursday, Hastert was indicted on charges that he illegally structured $1.7 million in payments to an individual in an attempt to cover up prior misconduct. According to reports, the payments were allegedly intended to “conceal sexual abuse against a former male student he knew during his days as a teacher in Yorkville, Ill.” The LA Times also reported that “investigators also spoke with a second man who raised similar allegations that corroborated what the former student said.”
Think Progress gives us the slimey highlights of these pigs, and how their righteous wrath became an incredible distraction for the final years of Clinton’s presidency.
And let’s not forget, our other home-grown adulterer, David Vitter, took over Livingston’s seat when he was forced out.
